Junior tenure track faculty position in Multifunctional Materials and Structure
Recent advances in the construction of 3D structures using polymers, metals, and carbon fiber have opened new design space to create specialized engineered materials that can be applied to new or existing components to facilitate reduced weight, localized increase of strength, selected failure mode mitigation, increased spectral energy absorption, and increased structural and multi-physics performance in the presence of stress, thermal, and electrical fields. The traditional approach to design commonly separates the material design from its function. For example, for many mechanical parts a metal or metal alloy is selected to withstand applied loads and more material is added in regions of high stress but there is no design associated with the selected material. Including methods to design engineered materials that are targeted at specific performance constraints allows for an expansive design space that will facilitate significantly enhanced designs resulting in optimal use of material and increased system performance.
