Major City: Sydney
High demand for: civil, construction, innovation, niche services, mechanical, environmental
Low demand for: resources, mining
Best Engineering Schools: University of New South Wales (UNSW), University of Sydney
New South Wales is home to some of the country’s best engineering schools. The University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney are both ranked among the top engineering schools in the world. Graduates from these universities are in particularly high demand from resource-rich states like Western Australia, driven by the mining boom.
NSW itself is not a resource-rich state, hence it would be profitable for mining graduates to relocate or undertake “fly-in fly-out” projects in WA with mining companies, many of whom have offices in Sydney. Large mining companies from resource-rich states also demand niche services and innovation from more specialised engineering disciplines in NSW.
The State Government of NSW consistently invests in public projects and infrastructure upgrades as the population of Sydney swells, so civil, structural and construction engineers are always in demand. Providing power and communications such as broadband to the cities and regions of NSW is a continual challenge, so there is a large market for electrical and electronic engineers.
